I had to focus hard on how I was thinking and breathing. She was quiet and sharp, bitterly forgiving. When Janine came home from school on my first day back, we were drinking coffee at the table, and Janine said "Hi Dad" without much interest. Later I heard Janine ask my wife, "Is Dad going to stay now?" My wife said, "He's promised to, but we have to help him and be patient and kind with him."
